Hearing Loss

Did you know...p

  • Hearing loss is the third most common physical condition after arthritis and hypertension (high blood pressure).

  • In older people, a hearing loss is often confused with or complicates such conditions as dementia.

  • About 20% of adults in the United States, 40 million, report some degree of hearing loss.

  • At age 60, 33% of all people have a hearing loss.

  • In adults, the most common causes of hearing loss are aging and noise exposure.

  • More often than not severe tinnuitus (ringing in the ear) will accompany a hearing loss and may be just as debilitating as the hearing loss itself.

  • Other causes of hearing loss include impacted earwax, an object in the ear or head, ear infection, a ruptured ear drum and other conditions that affect the middle or inner ear (data from Hearing Loss Association of America).
